you would have to factor in the amount of traffic that exposure from youtube gets them for those other monetary functions to get a real sense of how valuable it is to be or not be on that platform. Definitely feel like ethics should always come into play though and a lot of creators are branching out with hosting themselves or patreon/etc.

I was skeptical of them at first when looking for 2nd-life OS’s. There were a lot of sketchy looking and not really “user-friendly” sites/forums (postmarketOS being one of them) that I avoided but decided to try it anyways. It’s been fun and I’ve enjoyed having a decent OS to tinker with and see what capabilities I can get out of defunct equipment.
If I could get a secure smartphone use out of them I’m gonna be ecstatic. Been staring at phones and GrapheneOS for the past two years but glad I didn’t jump onto something yet.
I feel so proud of postmarketOS! I’ve been using them for 2nd life uses for phones, tablets, and chromebooks with very minimal problems. It’s like having an obscure band you follow all of a sudden getting mentioned everywhere and I couldn’t be happier for the project (like the 3rd time on Lemmy this week alone I’ve seen them mentioned).
If you have some scrap equipment throw it on and report your findings! There’s a lot of testing that needs done and information needs to flow. I’ve done a “recipe” notebook with an old chromebook, a tablet for easy video viewing I can send videos to (instead of making my partner come to the comp), and like 3 other devices that I haven’t finished with but pmOS will be a part of it.
Join their testing team if you have devices that aren’t listed! Unlike most requirements, if it’s not listed that just means it probably hasn’t been tested…not that it doesn’t work on your device. (they could probably also use some editors for their text instructions, it’s quite back and forth with links trying to find proper instructions).

but seriously, this article paints such a sad sad picture for them
The festival, which drew roughly 30 to 50 people at any given time on both Friday and Saturday (at a park…in the state capitol… it was just people wandering around wondering wtf was going on lol)
“He sang a song with lyrics that go against our values,” Fitzpatrick said… “This is yet another example of lies and deceptions from the Pride community. That’s what they are: liars and deceivers. They do it to victimize children. It’s pathetic and evil.”
like, ffs. That was such an insane comment to make after someone sings a song you don’t like, but then you find out the rest of his “events”
various events, including “Beers for Breeders” gatherings, Conspiracy Theory Trivia Night, where patrons can win an AR-15 rifle, Christian singles events, Bible study sessions, and gatherings for flat-earthers.
Cataphract@lemmy.mlto News@lemmy.world•Suspected Minnesota shooter’s friend says he was ‘not as upbeat’ after recent trip2·19 days agoEven with consuming mostly left-leaning media I keep seeing right-wing content hitting my feeds CONSTANTLY. It’s so insane that one video has “Destroyed X with this debate” while the next is “X Won debate against crazy rhetoric”. I’m not even singling out right wing with this either, everyone is just horrible with the click bait titles and I can see how powerful the bubbles are to expand yourself out of even if you have a desire too.

most public libraries and librarians spend a great deal of their time applying for grants, asking for donations, and parsing out the meager state and federal funds they receive. You can tell that a lot goes on in a public library besides what patrons see!
Did you know that staff salaries, books, other library materials, office supplies, and utilities are funded primarily by city and county taxes? (link)
Taking this chance to say support your local libraries! Even just being a patron will show that it’s a necessary resource that needs to continue. My partner and I just were talking about the library today and how we both used to go at least once a week back in the day but we’ve fallen off in the past decade.

There were hundreds of thousands protesting today, very small amount of turmoil. You would be more statistically likely to get hurt playing any type of sports or exercising at this point. Some people aren’t safe just “staying home” with ICE and authoritarian raids, make sure your son knows that you’re privileged to be able to feel that way.

Cataphract@lemmy.mlto Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Ron DeSantis Says Floridians Have Right to Hit Protesters With CarsEnglish42·23 days agoThis is the type of Pearl-clutching/fear mongering that lives in a head filled with propaganda. There are already laws in place which cover this type of fake scenario, the article itself dismisses the claims you’re trying to make. Find me a valid use-case for this law, there are hundreds of instances where the exact opposite happens and vehicles are used as a weapon to assault protesters but all you got are fictional “what ifs”? Don’t drive into a protest… Use common sense when you see a group of people gathered on the street like any sane person would.
Cataphract@lemmy.mlto News@lemmy.world•Trump's border czar says protests are making immigration raids more ‘difficult’ and ‘dangerous’51·23 days agoThis is such an insane and imaginative comment. Are the century old Americans that talk to you in the room with you right now? It’s absolutely crazy how you’ve taken some individual comments or perceived attitudes and created this fantasy land where you now have “owned the dipshits”. Let’s ignore the assassination attempts, current and planned protests going on through-out the country, people getting arrested for standing up for their fellow citizens, LUIGI!!, the college protests going on for months/years, this is such a selective memory you’re touting. This isn’t like the UK/Scotland police that just sit there peacefully (5 people were there initially and stopped their immigration enforcement per the article). Yet still we have hundreds and thousands of people still showing up and continuing to fight while you whine and complain online.
Holy shit, your entire engagement in this site is just comments about American “cowards”. Why haven’t you tried to immigrate and show Americans how it’s really done since you’re such a mister big boy bad ass? You seem to care enough to removed about it everyday but not do anything about it?

It does make me wonder about the presidential line of succession though. The Speaker of the house is 3rd in line, they could all get together tomorrow and vote him in.
The Constitution does not explicitly require the speaker to be an incumbent member of the House of Representatives… permitting a non-member to serve as Speaker would effectively exempt Speakers from the eligibility requirements of the House Qualifications Clause of Article I, Section II and from being bound by an oath of office under the Oath or Affirmation Clause of Article VI as opposed to House members. (link)
Would be fascinating to see how something like that would play out, scary, but still fascinating in a historical precedence kinda way.

like @[email protected] said, this show has a purpose and I think Trump is planning on going even harder and now they have someone they can pass the torch off to since they’ve already vetted his ideology and love his money. Gotta distance yourself at some point so you can swing in and be the “savior”. He can lay the whole DOGE think on the current administration getting in the way and will totally be a conservative this time. The comments and rhetoric around Elon are already starting to be softer now that he’s in this feud with Trump.

- They didn’t collect such information (they technically couldn’t), they are giving examples of such types of personally identifiable information.
- Yeah, it’s excessive, they don’t need half of this. However, writing it this way makes it near impossible for them to screw up by accident. If you play games, you probably agreed to a handful of ELUA’s like that by now.

Cataphract@lemmy.mlto World News@lemmy.world•World won’t forget Tiananmen Square, US and Taiwan say on 36th anniversary of massacreEnglish8·30 days agoNot trying to be confrontational or pedantic (there’s enough bickering in here) but it’s important to state that the Korean War is quite literally called “The Forgotten War”. In fact, it’s more important to point out that it wasn’t even a War, but considered a “police action” that claimed the lives of up to 3 million civilians (link).
Truman acted without seeking congressional authorization either in advance or in retrospect. He instead justified his decision on his authority as commander in chief. The move dramatically expanded presidential power at the expense of Congress, which eagerly cooperated in the sacrifice of its constitutional prerogatives.
Robert A. Taft of Ohio, one of the leading Republicans on Capitol Hill at the time, took to the Senate floor on June 28 to argue that “there is no legal authority for what he [Truman] has done.” Nor could Truman argue that the Korean conflict didn’t constitute war in a constitutional sense, even if he did downplay the significance of his decision. (At a press conference on June 29, Truman denied the country was at war, prompting a journalist to ask, “would it be correct…to call this a police action?” Truman answered simply, “Yes.”
Truman in the end acted because he believed, contrary to what the framers envisioned and the historical record showed, that as commander-in-chief he had the authority to order U.S. troops into combat… Truman was able to establish the precedent that presidents can take the country to war, though, because members of Congress were unwilling, Taft’s complaints notwithstanding, to defend their constitutional power from executive encroachment.
You can’t look at those statements and not make parallels to what’s going on in America today with the executive branch trying to sequester even more power. Ironically just recently saw a pretty decent video on the war by Mr. Beat
The War Americans Forgot About

Cataphract@lemmy.mlto politics @lemmy.world•AOC Seen as ‘Face’ of Democratic Party — and It’s Not Even Close: New Poll51·1 month agoMy concern with this take is “what are we considering this effect to be?” If we are taking the average republican who wholly considers themselves to be “Conservative”, their party was overtaken by extremists who are the antithesis to what the goal of that meaning is.
I don’t want a “Blue Maga” which takes the party away from progressive policies in an attempt to drum up fanatical support “against the tyrannical reds” while in reality they continue destroying the democracy we have. An example is a new DNC who wishes to prosecute and deport those who are on the right (there are examples on this site of individuals who are “progressives” but think the “right” should all be rounded up).
When people say they want a “tea party” I think it’s way to vague. Talking about the “effectiveness” of how the GOP has been changed is just completely scary, since in reality it just became a mask off-authoritarian free for all. I don’t need a Corporatized DNC to decide they no longer need the decorum of piece-meal policy that helps citizens since they know everyone has no other choice (like what happened with the GOP).
Again, I really hope a “Left Tea Party” would cause the DNC to capitulate to progressive ideology, but that’s not what happened on the conservative side (as evident from the big beautiful bullshit-bill).
edit: taking=talking, fixed a confusing sentence
Cataphract@lemmy.mlto politics @lemmy.world•AOC Seen as ‘Face’ of Democratic Party — and It’s Not Even Close: New Poll5·1 month agoWould it though? I’m not convinced of that. We already know what the party should look and act like based on actual progressive parties and policies around the world (even some past actions in the states itself), we really just need a name to know it by for everyone to get behind.
It’s the whole problem-solution thing, doesn’t matter what the name of the website or company is, we just need something to step in and fill that gap.
If you have an extra wifi router as well, secured network-security cameras. Lots of programs out there to do just that (been looking at a few and I’m not 100% on a perfect recommendation till I set something up myself).
