spujb@lemmy.cafeto News@lemmy.world•Elon Musk keeps tweeting the 'R-word.' Disability advocates say he needs to stop.English321·5 months agoAsking the eugenics advocate nazi to use nicer words about disabled people is kind of pointless considering he’d probably kill them if he could.
This should be a condemnation letter, it rubs me the wrong way that this is titled as such a defanged “please stop.”
spujb@lemmy.cafeto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Use ‘a’ when the word starts with a _consonant sound_, and ‘an’ when it starts with a _vowel sound_English5·5 months agodon’t even need an hour. “herb” has multiple regional pronunciations and so can receive both treatments depending on the context.
also my original comment was just wrong i don’t even know how i got to the point of writing that. “an hour” is the standard treatment of words starting with vowel sounds—the letters themselves don’t matter.
but “h” is treated as a consonant. which it is. duh. i feel so dumb lol.

spujb@lemmy.cafeto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Use ‘a’ when the word starts with a _consonant sound_, and ‘an’ when it starts with a _vowel sound_English1·5 months agono shame in that. it’s rough. fun fact: even the US founding fathers got it wrong
he has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating it’s most sacred rights of life & liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere, or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither (Thomas Jefferson’s original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence)
later prints corrected this error which happens three times from Jefferson’s hand.

spujb@lemmy.cafeto News@lemmy.world•Trump administration fires top US general and Navy chief in unprecedented purge of military leadershipEnglish1·5 months agoWhile I appreciate the cynicism around that truly absurd cliche “protecting their country,” there’s no credible evidence or even accusations linking either of these two individuals to war crimes, real or alleged.
spujb@lemmy.cafeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How can A person find out if they were hired as a DEI or fired because of it?English10·5 months agoYou are unhelpfully combative. DEI factually is a term that has been made a victim of twisting and manipulation. Flickerman was well within their rights to point out that this malformation of meaning has gone so far as to influence the basic grammatical use of the term.
You will notice that Flickerman even gives OP an out, admitting that their misusage of the term might be unintentional, likely skewed by years of propaganda. That is, OP could be entirely innocent and misled.
Therefore, ironically, the individual here who is truly reacting programmatically to seek victimhood, is you. :)
spujb@lemmy.cafeto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How can A person find out if they were hired as a DEI or fired because of it?English322·5 months agoBe sure to read and take seriously the comments here, OP. They are correct. The majority of the media you have consumed about “DEI” was intentional lies to make you believe oligarchs and billionaires were on your side against a constructed enemy.
That enemy isn’t real. The billionaires aren’t on your side. They just wanted to cultivate your anger for personal gain, and for many, unfortunately, that propagandizing was successful.

spujb@lemmy.cafeOPto News@lemmy.world•[Meta] Petition to limit daily posts per user in this communityEnglish32·5 months agoYeah this is also where I am more or less coming from. I think it’s good for it to be said in a meta post where the discussion is built for it.

spujb@lemmy.cafeOPto News@lemmy.world•[Meta] Petition to limit daily posts per user in this communityEnglish74·5 months agoThat’s kind of been my position too. Like I guess “people were posting low quality content” but if it’s no evidence of malice/rule breaking, what’s stopping people from just curating their feed and blocking users they see too much?
Still fifty-fifty on this for the record but I am glad there is more wholesome and constructive discussion on this still coming in :)

spujb@lemmy.cafeOPto News@lemmy.world•[Meta] Petition to limit daily posts per user in this communityEnglish33·5 months agoThat’s an excellent point. Like, if we are going to have high-volume power users (which is an inevitability) it’s honestly arguably good and transparent for them to use single accounts that individual users can block—like at least they are known power users and it’s not being obfuscated.
I’m personally still fifty-fifty on the rule but this did sway me a bit.

Re: your last paragraph. I’m literally just a third party user who was not involved in any of the conflict in any way, suggesting one potential resolution that at this point I still think could go either way.
It’s fair to assume that I was talking about myself but rest assured I have no personal investment here and my only commitment is to what is best for the community. :)

spujb@lemmy.cafeOPto News@lemmy.world•[Meta] Petition to limit daily posts per user in this communityEnglish62·5 months agoYour comment is confusing because this is a petition post, not a rule change. I have no leadership role here. If anything changes there will most likely be internal mod communication and then an announcement post if the rule change is significant enough to merit it.
OMG THATS WHAT I WAS REMEMBERING TY
