There are transporter bots that admin configure to run in the background. These are what transport the likes and comments between instance servers. You are connected to one of these instance servers. LW has a large volume of interactions so some instances may limit how often or what is transported by the bots between servers. It is all done with activity hub protocol. Take a minute in a desktop browser to view the page source for Lemmy and you’ll better understand what is involved and how information is passed around. It looks like structured text. This is pretty easy to spot even if you are unfamiliar with code. You’ll likely understand why the message exists about DM not being private too, and maybe understand why blocking works poorly on Lemmy as that is pretty much implied.

If an instance defederates, what that actually means is that the admin is not allowing the automated background bots to carry activities between the two instances. Everything up to that point is already synchronized and does not go away.

It was much the same nearly 20 years ago too. My folks got their first house for less than $100k. I barely scraped by with my business painting cars around 04-06. I went back to it around 07 and did alright until used car lots flat lined for 3 months straight in late 08. I never recovered from the criminal shit the banks did to real estate and fucked the economy. I tried to gt a good job but stuff like an apprenticeship with a local Union had 3k+ applicants show up for 15 positions. I would have been 3rd generation and work my ass off but it did nothing. I did the Los Angeles Fire Department interview one time. They literally use the Long Beach convention center’s basement level to do the first two stages. The first stage had over 10k people show up to take the written test. I made it to the last 600, but they filtered on EMT experience and that cut me in the second to last before the fire academy. When I worked in the bike shops as a Buyer for a chain, everyone working there had a university degree but me. Such is life here. Nothing is made here so it is a race to the bottom. And this is as good as it gets in the USA. I have lived mostly in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia but south of LA now. The rest of the country is much worse than here.

I was disabled by a terrible driver at 29 while riding a bicycle to work. That was 11 years ago. When my folks die, I will die shortly thereafter because I face homelessness in an impossible system in the USA. There is direct evidence of people taking care if the disabled and elderly in the remains of ancient humans many tens of thousands of years ago. If we cannot rise to the standards of prehistoric people living in caves, perhaps none of us has a right to exist.

One of our biggest problems is cultural across the entire West. We have a mindset like we are at some final state of technology and extraction of wealth is acceptable. It largely stems from unchecked inherited wealth. Meritocracy is critical for success in any system. Inherited wealth will always cause stagnation and decline because intelligence and business acumen are not inherited traits. For example, Donald Trump is worth far less now than if he had taken his vast inheritance, bought government bonds, and stayed on Epstein island permanently.

When you’re young, such ideas about the burden of others lack perspective. Your view will change as those around you that you care about face the probabilities of life poorly and you notice the injustices they encounter where the social safety net is their only lifeline. If you do not develop to the point of such depth of self awareness, you’re likely to be the one in need of assistance eventually.

It is fundamentally a theft of the autonomy, self determinism, and right to unfiltered information required for citizens in a functioning democracy. Loss of ownership is fundamentally a coup against democracy by overlords of neo feudalism.

Frame your argument as a citizen wronged by thieves and you will defeat the nonsense. Ownership of any part of your person including your digital presence to exploit and manipulate is a form of modern slavery; literally buying and selling people to manipulate and exploit them. Anything that has any potential to filter information, no matter how remote, unlikely, or illegal, is an act of treason in a real democracy when it lacks full transparency. Every digital device you use must be fully publicly documented with a publicly accessible toolchain for anyone to monitor or review. Trust as a policy is fundamentally opposed to democracy without exceptions. Trust is a trap of authoritarianism. Citizens are required to be fully informed and skeptical of all sources. For example, every mobile device made has a proprietary SoC processor and modem that are interconnected in undocumented ways. There is absolutely no way to know who or what is truly connected to these devices at any point in time. This is the real reason removable batteries no longer exist despite being more dangerous, wasteful, and an environmental disaster.

Yeah, I’m kinda volunteering for the mod part. In truth I think it would take the respective instance admin setting up such a thing specifically. Like create a throwaway or something so that the actual user is not propagated to other admin or the full activity pub feed being transported. The one instance admin would know and have the ability to filter or block, but that information would never escape the one server. As a mod I would be blind to actual potential bad actors and only filter at the liberal community and comments level. So basically a normal community that replaces the OP name with Anon, and never shares the real ID with anyone.

I keep seeing people go to the effort of creating a throwaway account to say or post stuff they want or need to externalize on the threadiverse. I’m willing to bet that for every person that goes to that much effort, there are likely somewhere between 10-100 people that lack an outlet and motivation to do the same. Greentext is just a mutual pretext on my part for genuinely caring about people under pressure right now and in need of an outlet in a way that is not really well supported by the fediverse or activity pub.

We are small enough here that regular names and people can hold meaning in familiarity and memorable history. Kind words and social interaction anonymously from these may hold considerably more value and meaning within this social dynamic that is not afforded elsewhere.

Drive to your local LKQ distribution center with stock and an extra $100. Abolish digital slavery and publicly code and fund the public commons with no scraping or exploitation whatsoever. Restore the rights of autonomy and self determinism required for a citizen in a democracy and people will return to the culture that existed before google won its privateer piracy charter to digitally enslave everyone in exchange for free email and search results because the US was too backwards to fund the fundamental public commons required for real democracy and was itching for slavery again at the first opportunity of going unnoticed.

Not as of a year or so back. I’m not sure how it works but there are several settings available in the manufacturer’s app that are not in Linux. Only the hotkey settings from the fn+ function keys work. Dmesg spits out a block of unrecognized memory that is something like 8 or 16 bits long that is the likely culprit. There is some odd microcontroller on a serial bus that is unrecognized too IIRC but that I have never seen before like any of the thousands found on LCSC. Last time I checked linux-hardware.org, it looked like no one had solved this one on any of the scans. I’m not motivated to chase it down myself. Poking some registers or watching for the changed location after using the built in hotkey would be peripherally interesting as a general thing to know.

How does one find an unknown register in hardware for a similar but undocumented setting? My laptop has an undocumented microcontroller for the RGB keyboard. I can change it through the extra function keys but only to a 3 level preset and not the real fine tuned control. I can dual boot and change the setting with their app and it is persistent. If I could discover all registers their app uses I would totally ditch w11 and free up a good bit of space. I figure it is just a block of memory somewhere, (thinking like Arduino stuff), but I am clueless about how to find that at OS level complexity… If anyone here casually knows at a conversational social level here, like don’t go looking it up for me or whatnot

The UEFI boot system is tricky and you need to get along with Secure Boot to do this. Secure Boot is outside of the Linux kernel. Both Fedora and Ubuntu have systems for this. Fedora uses the Anaconda system and I believe they do it best. I have had a W11 partition for 2 years and never used it once. It can’t even get on the internet with my firewall setup, but it is there and never had any issues the 3 times I logged into it.

I think all of the Fedora systems support the shim key and secure boot but I know Workstation does. For Ubuntu I think it is just the regular vanilla Ubuntu desktop that the shim supports. This may be somewhat sketchy with Nvidia or maybe not. Nvidia “”““open sourced””“” their kernel code but the actual nvcc compiler required to build the binaries is still proprietary crap.

I have a 3080Ti gaming laptop. It isn’t half bad with 16 GB of video RAM from all the way back in 2021. Nvidia is artificially holding back the vram because of monopoly nonsense. The new stuff has very little real consumer value as a result, at least with AI stuff I run. The hardware is a little faster, but more vram is absolutely critical and new stuff that is the same or worse than what I have from 3 generations and nearly 5 years ago is ridiculous.

The battery life blows and the GPU likely won’t even work on battery. It will get donkey balls hot with AI workloads, especially any kind of image gen. This results in lots of thermal throttling. All AI packages run as servers on your network. If you are thinking along these lines if running your own models, get a tower and run the thing remotely.

I manage, and need the ergonomics for physical disability reasons, but I still would prefer to have a separate tower to run models from.

Anyways, you can sign your own UEFI keys to use any distro, but this can be daunting for some people. The US defense department has a good PDF guide on setting your own keys. The UEFI bootloader for the machine may not have all key signing features implemented. There is a way to boot into UEFI directly and set the keys manually but this is not easy to find great guides on how to do it step by step. Gentoo has a tutorial on this, but it assumes a high level of competency.

Other than signing your own keys, the shim keys mentioned are special keys signed by Microsoft for the principal maintainer of the distro. These slide under the Microsoft key to keep secure boot enabled.

If you boot any secure boot enabled OS, the bootloader is required to delete any bootable unsigned code it finds. It does not matter if it is a shimmed Fedora or W11. If you have any other OS present in the boot list, it should be deleted. W11 is SB only, and this is where the real issues arise.
