  • I don’t know why you’re getting pushback and downvotes on this, it’s factual.

Have we ALSO lost track of facts people? Are we the same as the ones who made this all go to shit, unable to separate facts from feelings? USA isn’t just “a superpower” it’s THE superpower, it’s the wealthiest nation on earth with a military force larger and more advanced than all other nations put together. What do you call that?

THIS is why it’s such a huge deal that we all fucking let the dumbest, evilest people in the world take the controls. Are you really just so nihilistic and self-obsessed that you’re willing to discard the largest and most powerful democracy on earth because you feel jaded and cynical because “America bad?”

Dude, clean your room. Seriously, this is our home, this is where we live. LETS FIX IT.

  • I am also in the US and horribly disappointed in how our population let the world’s stupidest and vilest people manipulate them into giving over control. I really had high hopes for America, democracies are really our best hope for the future.

But now I just want it to accelerate, we need the shit to really hit the fan so our population wakes up and realizes who the real enemies are, the putins and musks and trumps and millers and bannons… they are the beasts that stalk us in the modern age and need to be put down or taken away and the only way this will happen is enough people become uncomfortable enough that they forget the narratives and storylines that manipulate us so easily.

  • In a span of ten years, I lost two parents, a sibling, another sibling was committed and never recovered, nearly lost my partner of 20 years and she ended up in a coma for a month, as a result I lost our shared business, lost my car as a result, then two pets died, then lost my house. Set to all this was Donald Fucking Trump being elected twice, a rampaging virulent epidemic that half the people didn’t believe was real, and nazis coming back and genocides becoming fashionable again, and violent anti-science groups forming across the world.

It’s reeaaallly hard to not think that there’s something deeply wrong with the world. Particularly after growing up in the 80’s and 90’s when our biggest cultural upset was Ellen coming out on TV guide.

  • Reddit’s mechanics are not the whole story about why it became the juggernaut it is, the platform of people making their own forums isn’t new. What happened was a few major sites like Digg, Somethingawful, Fark, 4chan and a lot of old-school staples on the internet from the 90’s on through the 2010’s suddenly lost popularity as their user base matured at the same time reddit moved in. There were other factors, sure I was around during it all but it’s all quite complicated, but I’m pretty sure if reddit broadly started returning 404’s tomorrow, Lemmy would see a slight jump in users but people are just going to want the next new thing and it would be some entirely new thing that captures the world’s online browsing.

I’ve never seen a website replace another by copying it’s layout and mechanics. I’ve seen a lot of popular platforms die, but never resurrect in the same form, people always want something novel and they want to feel like they’re getting in ground-floor on something special. Reddit still offers that by giving users a chance to contribute early to conversations about current events, but if there were a new system that gave people a similar system and found some other way to give users a little serotonin boost like the votes do, then it would slay reddit pretty handedly.

  • I consider myself very average, and all my average interactions with AI have been abysmal failures that are hilariously wrong. I invested time and money into trying various models to help me with data analysis work, and they can’t even do basic math or summaries of a PDF and the data contained within.

I was impressed with how good the things are at interpreting human fiction, jokes, writing and feelings. Which is really weird, in the context of our perceptions of what AI will be like, it’s the exact opposite. The first AI’s aren’t emotionless robots, they’re whiny, inaccurate, delusional and unpredictable bitches. That alone is worth the price of admission for the humor and silliness of it all, but certainly not worth upending society over, it’s still just a huge novelty.

  • We need a Democratic Tea Party movement very badly.

Unfortunately, I already know the people who would lead it would also never get past making the rules of who’s included, what kind of tea we’ll be using, and if it’s ethically sourced, and if any members have any problematic tweets in their past, what particular brand of socialism everyone subscribes to, and of course, what we’re actually demanding from the government.

Say what you want about the right, but their superficial, Ork-like focus on goals gets them moving. Too bad those goals are usually things like “Vote against our best interests as much as humanly possible.”

edit: I love that half the comments below are people disagreeing about how we would organize it and what we would want and who we would include. I both despair and celebrate that I’m not someone who can just hear a single word like “woke” and just laser-focus on uniting with literal crocodiles to take it down. Identify our weaknesses people, stop trying to be smarter than the problem. The problem is stupid simple, we have wealthy elite stealing our lives and futures away and the right is enabling them. Full stop, we should be fucking marching locked-arm with people whom we’ve been told to abhor to fix this. Imagine if people became scared to associate with billionaires. Imagine if we all did something.
