These people gave them the keys in exchange for hearing what they wanted.
They no longer have leverage as far as the politician is concerned, so he’s done telling them what they want to hear.

Reminder that Liberalism is also a right-wing ideology, it’s just a bit more socially centrist than conservatism. You don’t really have much of a left-wing voice in US politics at all, beyond a couple of politicians, I’m afraid.
Actual left wing politicians are guided by ideology to primarily benefit the greatest number of people with their policy.
Right wing politicians are guided by ideology to primarily benefit those holding the greatest amount of capital with their policy.
Pretty much everything else follows from that.
